Give a great group presentation

Presentations can be daunting, and the thought of having to prepare within limited time constraints can add to the pressure of presenting. Rest assured, as we’ve got you covered with our group presentation top tips to help alleviate any nerves and give a great performance in the group presentation.

Top tips for group presentations

Take time to read and understand the brief once you have access to it Although you have limited time to prepare, make sure you use some of this time to read the brief thoroughly and understand what you are being asked to present on. TOP TIP: Discuss as a group to choose the best topic and take time to define what each person’s role within the group will be.

Carefully consider the content of your presentation
Make sure your presentation has a clear introduction, body of content, and conclusion. It should address the brief in an informative and entertaining manner, covering all essential points in a logical sequence. If using visual aids, they should benefit your delivery without being too distracting. For example, don't fill PowerPoint slides full of text - maintain a good balance between text and images.
TOP TIP: Don’t read word for word from any slides you create as this will make you appear unconfident and prevent you from engaging with the audience.

Keep it simple and focus on your core message
Ask the question - what is the core message my group wants to deliver to our audience? Ensure every point you make is relevant to this message and adds strength to your argument. Use your time wisely. Stick to the time limit given whilst addressing the presentation brief in full and covering the most important points.
TOP TIP: You’ll be marked down if your presentation is either too short or too long. Allocate some time within your preparation to determine which group member will cover which points of the presentation.

Speak up Everyone in the group should contribute to both the preparation and the delivery of the presentation. Ensure your group splits the content equally so everyone has the chance to speak when presenting to the assessor. TOP TIP: Be inclusive and create a space where everyone feels confident to contribute. If there is a quieter member of the group, ask them questions to encourage them to share their thoughts.

Engage with your audience
When presenting, make eye contact with your audience and smile! Smiling is infectious, right? The assessor will naturally smile back which will help put you at ease. Consider your tone of voice - do you sound enthusiastic about your topic?
TOP TIP: If you don’t vary the pitch and tone of your voice you risk coming across as unenthusiastic which will be noted by the assessor.

Always invite questions from the audience
At the end of your presentation let your audience know you're willing to address any questions they may have. TOP TIP: If you're asked a question you weren’t expecting, take time to formulate your response. If you're unsure of the answer, explain how you would go about finding the answer.

Practise, practise, practise!
Although you have to prepare the presentation on the day of the assessment centre in a group, this doesn’t stop you practising your presentation skills. Pick a topic you find interesting and prepare a mock presentation, so you can practise presenting out loud.
TOP TIP: Set your equipment up and have a test prior to the assessment centre. Make sure there are no distractions in the background or any disturbances on the day. There is nothing worse than a family member interrupting you mid video conference call or your cat walking across the keyboard!
